COVID-19 has seen many countries, including the UK, put under lockdown again in the last few weeks, but the changes that can happen to both the mind and body, seemingly quite quickly, due to stay-at-home confinement are unprecedented.

Lockdown poses many challenges for those suffering from musculoskeletal pain as the disruption of the typical daily life routine, coupled with anxiety, isolation, greater family and work stress, and excessive screen time can have dire consequences.

People suffering from bone, joint and muscle pain will often experience pain and stiffness in the joints, fatigue and muscle weakness. According to a survey of more than 600 people from across the UK by the University of East Anglia, people suffering from musculoskeletal pain have seen their symptoms worsen during the Government lockdown.

According to the British Chiropractic Association, in relation to the latest COVID-19 Government restrictions and regulations, chiropractic services are allowed to remain open in the UK throughout the lockdown period and people may travel to and from a chiropractor. As well as being legally permissible, and allowing chiropractic services to continue, it reduces the burden on the NHS for musculoskeletal treatments, especially for those finding it difficult to access NHS services due to the pandemic.

With other services such as sports massage and reflexology not being permitted during the lockdown, it is important for chiropractors to remain open so that they can provide much-needed patient care, particularly when a client is in pain.

It remains vitally important that each patient individually assesses his or her own circumstances, particularly if they fall into any higher risk categories when deciding to attend a face-to-face appointment with a chiropractor at Backworks. Alongside this all patients will be screened prior to their appointment in relation to COVID-19, to ensure that it is appropriate to carry out a face-to-face appointment. We are also asking all of our patients to wear a face covering when attending the clinic.

During the lockdown, online chiropractic consultations continue to be one of the first choices of chiropractic treatment for deciding whether a patient needs to be seen face-to-face, for those that are unable to attend the clinic or those that may prefer this service.

A remote consultation is conducted in the same way as a regular appointment, except that you will see and speak to your chiropractor via a video conference call. During the online consultation, the practitioner will take a detailed history of your symptoms, provide a diagnosis, educate you about the problem and provide further advice. They will also be able to prescribe or demonstrate a tailored exercise programme to help resolve the issue.
